Are you raising a helpless child?

The number of college students going to counselors nationwide has doubled in some schools, and some therapists say parents shoulder should some of that blame.

"Children today are far more anxious, and they have fewer coping skills," said Stephanie Donaldson-Pressman, an author and therapist. "This is a new phenomenon."

Some therapists believe young adults now can't handle minor set-backs in life. The reason could be due to over-bearing parents. Some doctors suggest giving your child a little space and some tough love.

Therapist Michael Meirer says teaching your child how to overcome failure is key to their success after leaving the house.

"Having our children understand that failure's not a statement about the person (is important)," Meirer said. "It's not how many times you get knocked down; it's how many times you stand back up."

So here's what parents can do to help their child succeed before going off to college:

First, get your kids off their screens and have family meals together. This helps with communication skills.

Second, give your kids chores to do around the house and schedule homework time.

Also, if your child plays a sport, make sure they want to show up for practice on time, they have the equipment they need, and they're trying.

Therapists say parents need to be careful about helping their kids too much. The kids who don't quit on their own, those are the ones experts say will stay on the path to success, and better manage daily bumps in the road.
